Can sole traders get business grants in Scotland?

Last updated 2026-09-01

Sole traders are eligible for a large share of Scottish business funding, particularly startup, training, digital and energy programmes. Some larger innovation and R&D funds are limited to incorporated businesses.

Where sole traders usually qualify

Local startup schemes, training subsidies, digital support, tourism improvements and energy efficiency programmes commonly accept sole traders alongside limited companies.

Where they often do not

Competitive R&D funding and larger capital programmes may require a limited company, audited accounts or a minimum turnover. If a fund is a good fit apart from structure, ask the provider whether incorporating first would make you eligible.

Practical points

  • Register as self-employed before applying where required
  • Use a business bank account if you can
  • Keep clear records separating business and personal spending
